40+ Pleura Anatomy. The parietal pleura folds back on itself at the root of the lung to become the visceral pleura. A small amount of serous pleural fluid is maintained in the pleural cavity to enable lubrication between the membranes, and also to create a pressure gradient.
The visceral pleura covers the surface of each lung and may dip between the lobes of the lung as fissures. Like the peritoneum, the pleura is a serous membrane which is lined by mesothelium (flattened epithelium), there are two. The pleura is a monolayer of mesothelial cells covering the lung and inner surface of the chest cavity, creating the pleural space.
